How to Setup and Install WordPress Postie Plugin?

The article guides you on how you can use the Postie plugin to enable posting to WordPress by e-mail.

# Posting to WordPress through e-mail

There may be times when you wish to post something on your WordPress without login or just by sending an email, isn’t it?

Like, take an example, if you are using a portable device like mobile phone or tab, then you must have observed that it gets difficult to log in to WordPress administrate interface and compose a post. Instead, it gets much easier and convenient to simply compose an e-mail message and send it to an e-mail account that WordPress monitors.

So, to do so, there are several WordPress plugins available. In this article, we will learn how to install and configure one of such plugins – Postie plugin.

# Steps to install POSTIE

Perform the following steps to install POSTIE :

1. Log in to WordPress as an administrator.

2. Click on Plugins, present in the left-hand side of the panel.

3. Click on Add New.

4. In the text box for Search, type postie and then click on Search Plugins.

5. In the Name column, locate the Postie and then click on Install Now.

6. Once the WordPress finishes installing the plugin, click on Activate Plugin.

# Steps to configure POSTIE

After installing POSTIE, perform the following steps to configure it :

1. Log in to WordPress as an administrator.

2. Click on Settings, present in the left side of the panel, and then click on Postie. The Postie Settings page will appear.

3. On the Mailserver tab, in the Mail Protocol list box, select either POP3-SSL or IMAP-SSL.

4. In the text box for Port, type 993 if you have selected IMAP-SSL in the previous step. Otherwise, type 995 if you have selected POP3-SSL in step 3.

5. In the text box for Mail Server, type your server name (example: mws80.mileswebhosting.com).

6. In the text box for Mail Userid, type the e-mail address where you want to receive post submissions.

7. In the text box for Mail Password, type the password for the e-mail account you specified in the previous step.

8. In the Check for mail every list box, select how often do you want Postie to check the e-mail account for new messages.

9. In the list box for a Maximum number of emails to process, select a limit on the number of messages that Postie can process at one time.

10. Click on the User tab.

11. Ensure that the Allow Anyone To Post Via Email list box is set to No.

12. In the text box for Authorized Addresses, type the e-mail to the address (or addresses) from which you want to allow post submissions.

13. You can precisely have control over how Postie processes e-mail post submission by working on settings on the Message, Image, Video, and Audio.

14. Click on Save Changes.

15. Under the Postie Settings, click on Test Config. Under the Connect to Mail Host, you will see Successful IMAP-SSL connection on port 993 or Successful POP3-SSL connection on port 995, depending on the settings selected in step 3. In case you don’t receive this message, check for the settings you provided in steps 3 and 7, and then try again.

16. Now, test an e-mail using e-mail client application or webmail to send a test e-mail from the address you specified in step 12, to the recipient address that you specified in step 6, and then click on Process Email. The e-mail message will appear on your WordPress front page as a new post.
