Unable to open /proc/vz/veinfo: No such file or directory

 2 min

When trying to check the VPS on a OpenVZ node with command vzlist -a it shows an error as below.

Unable to open /proc/vz/veinfo: No such file or directory
Unable to open /proc/user_beancounters: No such file or directory

It is simply because OpenVZ kernel is not in effect. You have to boot the server with OpenVZ kernel.

Login to your node as root and open file /etc/grub.conf. Set default value to 0 if the first kernel is set to OpenVZ (2.6.32-042stab079.6). Save file & Exit.

Reboot the node & once it’s online if the server uses OpenVZ kernel with command below.

[root@server ~]# uname -a

An output something as below should be shown.

Linux server.domain.com 2.6.32-042stab079.6 #1 SMP Mon Aug 26 19:47:50 MSK 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Now, try listing the VPS & it should work.
